- Good. Get some rest. Usual time.
I tried not to overthink that text.
Tried being the operative word.
I over-thought it until it made no sense anymore, until I was too exhausted to do anything other than pass out.
Then I went ahead and woke up to overthink it again the next day.
And the day after that.
Chapter Eleven
Lucky
"We got a full name," Massimo said as he opened the door for me, moving aside to let me in.
Rage was a fire burning through my system.
I'd just barely been able to contain it long enough to appear calm and collected for Via as I dropped her off. I sat there in my car, white-knuckling my steering wheel, worry sparking off every nerve ending, not sure if that bastard might be lying in wait for her. But then she'd texted me, letting me know she was safe behind a locked door.
That was when I allowed the anger to break free of the confines I'd kept it behind.
I didn't have a lot of triggers for my anger. But men putting their hands on women? Yeah, that was at the top of my list. It was a trigger in general, but it never felt quite as strong as it did right then. Because my life hadn't been touched by it. My mom and my sisters and my cousins, the women around me were all so protected, were lucky enough to never have bruises on their skin from a trusted man, or even a stranger.
Actually seeing it up close on a woman I did care aboutâand we just weren't going to think about why it was that I caredâit was a whole new different kind of outrage.
"Brant Ricci," Massimo continued when he closed the door.
Brio was by the window, deceptively calm, standing wide-legged with his hands clasped behind his back. I didn't know the man well, but I felt I knew him well enough to figure there was nothing calm and collected about him right then. Not when I'd seen the crazy in his eyes when he'd seen the bruises on Via.
"What else?" I demanded, my jaw aching I had it clenched so tightly.
"Got an address. If he's been working all night, he will probably be home sleeping soon."
"You know what might be fun?" Brio asked, tone chilling. Turning over his shoulder, he finished with a smirk. "If he woke up on fire."
"Jesus Christ," Massimo said, running a hand through his hair.
"No? No good? Baby oil down the throat?" Brio asked.
"Do I want to ask?" I said.
"Baby oil is a hydrocarbon," Brio explained, as if I had any idea what that might be. That was the kind of shit only psychopaths knew about. "It gets aspirated into your lungs. If it's only a little, you get pneumonia. If it's a lot though," he went on, the smile he had on freaky enough to send a chill through me, "it blocks the air sacs from working. Not even the best doctor can do anything about it."
"Why bother with that than just suffocating someone?" Massimo asked, like this was totally normal conversation.
